"The pictures which I was to paint a few weeks after entering the
St. Lamberti church in February 2005 formed themselves
instantly and vividly in a matter of seconds. The place itself
disclosed them to me. Immediatly there was a very definite idea for
a picture cycle, a sort of circulation of light in harmony with the
structure and form of the building".

The current exhibition of 12 paintings, one for each of the 12 church
pillars developed out of this central idea. The colour composition of
the paintings is directly related to the chromatic colour circle of
Goethe´s Colour Theory.

The 12 surface colours are each moved half of the picture width in a
clockwise direction. Thus creating a continuous circular colour
motion from one painting to the next. A circulation of reflected light.

A further compositional element is a cross of light. A column of light
flows down form above falling vertically through the centre of each
picture. Another column of light flows horizontally connecting the 12
paintings together reflecting the circular shape of the church.

The picture-cycle consists of 12 paintings which correspond in size
and number to the pillars of the St. Lamberti-Church Rotunda in the
city of Oldenburg, Germany. The composition is directly related to
the chromatic colour circle of Goethe's colour theory. The paintings
merge together on many different levels working unified and silent in
this special place, in harmony with the entire building.

After his first visit to The St. Lamberti Church the Irish artist Gregory
Seán Sheehan spontaneously created a cycle of 12 pictures which
are on show from the 18th of June until 18th of September 2005.

Describing his visit in February 2005 and the inspiring effect this
building had on him together with its dome and symbolic structure,
he wrote:

"An almost accidental visit to this church left me deeply moved and
fascinated and was the inspiration for this picture cycle. It was as if
this building spoke to me. The hint of eternity which can felt here
sparked off and led to the initial idea for this work".
